Senior Indigenous Engagement Specialist

Reporting to the Communications & Stakeholder Engagement, Manager, this position is responsible for the following duties:

 

Responsibilities include: 

·       Be a champion for Indigenous engagement and inclusion in all Orano Canada activities

·       Draw upon knowledge and connection with Indigenous communities and leadership, particularly in northern Saskatchewan, to maintain and strengthen Orano’s relationships with Indigenous employees, companies and partners

·       As a representative of Orano, you will work as part of the CSR team to ensure that Orano’s obligations in the Collaboration Agreements are fulfilled and appropriately conveyed

·       Regularly visit and engage with northern communities to participate in meetings and events, answer questions, provide liaison services, present information on projects, develop and maintain respectful relationships with Indigenous leaders, and northern community leaders 

·       Support northern and Indigenous inclusion and recruitment. Engage with Community Liaisons, and assist HR and McClean Lake staff in finding qualified candidates for employment

·       Inspire northern hiring beyond Orano’s direct workforce. Encourage and recommend potential employees to all contractors working on Orano projects

·       Identify, monitor and work to resolve developing issues and concerns from northern and Indigenous communities, in coordination with the CSR and Orano management team

·       Represent Orano Canada on the ICMM Indigenous Peoples Working Group to remain up to date on international standards and practices

·       Support Regulatory Relations by providing opportunities for meaningful Indigenous engagement for projects and advancing current activities

·       Support Orano’s exploration activities by working with the Exploration, Supply Chain and Regulatory Relations departments during the planning, regulatory and business contracting aspects of Orano’s activities

·       Work with Orano’s Supply Chain Department in developing northern business capacity and promoting Orano contracting opportunities, to build long term, sustainable, high-quality supplier relationships in northern Saskatchewan and strengthen Orano’s supply network

·       Administer Orano scholarship and targeted training programs, for the advancement of Athabasca Basin and northern students, and prospective employees

·       Participate in northern Saskatchewan and Indigenous inclusion committees

·       Promote Indigenous cultural understanding at the Saskatoon office and work with the McClean Lake site elder to enhance the knowledge and experience of Indigenous employees

·       Embrace and support Operational Excellence efforts and OE Culture

·       Comply with all Orano health, safety and environmental policies, practices and procedures

·       Promote and adhere to Orano Canada’s values: Customer Satisfaction, Continuous Improvement, Respect and People Development, Cohesion and Team Spirit, and Exemplarity, Integrity, Responsibility

 

Skills and Qualifications for the position include:

·       Knowledge of the history and present-day challenges faced by Indigenous people in Saskatchewan

·       Preference will be given to qualified Indigenous candidates

·       Experience working with Saskatchewan’s Indigenous peoples; with a minimum of 5 years’ experience

·       Experience living and working in northern Saskatchewan, in particular the Athabasca Basin, will be considered an asset

·       Post-secondary education related to Indigenous Studies, Economic Development, Education, Human Resource Development, Environmental Science or other related disciplines and/or combination of relevant work experience

·       Ability to communicate fluently in English and have a practical working knowledge of one of the northern Indigenous languages. Ability to speak Dene or Cree will be considered an asset

·       Effective project management skills

·       Ability to develop policy/programs and to interpret government and company policy

·       Must have computer skills and be familiar with Microsoft Office Suite including PowerPoint

·       Must possess a valid driver’s license

·       Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills required for the creation of effective relationships, considering the diversity of the geography and culture of Saskatchewan

·       Strong engagement and organizational skills are required

·       Must be patient and adaptable, allowing for the participation of a variety of voices

·       Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders on a diverse group of projects

·       Honest and ethical

 

Work Location & Schedule: 

·       Saskatoon Corporate Office

·       Regular travel to northern communities and mine sites will be required

 

 

As a condition of employment the successful candidate must complete Orano’s pre-employment checks including education verification and employment reference checks.

 

Drug (including marijuana) and alcohol substance testing is a requirement for all Safety Sensitive positions. Applicants who have recently used marijuana recreationally may not pass a substance test as marijuana can remain in the user’s system for as many as 30 days after use.
