Exploration Safety Coordinator – Posting 2024-038
Foran Mining has recently completed a positive feasibility study for the McIlvenna Bay project and have started advanced design, permitting and preliminary construction activities to build underground mining and milling facilities as well as the supporting infrastructure. Foran's Geoscience & Discovery Department requires a proactive, practical and culture-focused Exploration Safety Coordinator will work with our exploration and drilling teams to deliver safe and effective drilling, geophysics and field programs while ensuring a positive, supportive onsite experience. Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the successful candidate will encourage, educate and empower individuals within these teams to take responsibility for the safety of themselves and others. This position will be responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and maintenance of Exploration health and safety programs, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements and promote a culture of safety within the organization.
This position may also provide cross functional support to the McIlvenna Bay project as required.
Job Responsibilities:
· Stay informed about federal, state/provincial, and local health and safety regulations relevant to the organization's operations.
· Assist in the development and implementation of comprehensive health and safety programs, policies, and procedures
· Regularly review and update safety policies to reflect best practices and regulatory changes.
· Maintain accurate records of safety-related data, including incident reports, safety meeting minutes, and training records.
· Prepare and submit required safety reports to regulatory authorities.
· Reviewing and updating safe work procedures to reflect best practices and regulatory changes
· Conducting regular safety work and drill site inspections and workplace audits (pre, post and during work activities) to identify hazards and areas for improvement
· Actively participating in and leading daily line up and weekly safety meetings
· Proactively communicate, coach and mentor Foran’s Critical Hazard Rules
· Early identification of potential hazards and fatal risks associated with exploration activities by conducting risk assessments in conjunction with Exploration team and with support of company safety officers
· Develop and organize innovative and required regulatory training for all Exploration team members (WHIMIS, Spill Reporting, SHE and C Policy, Violence and Harassment, etc)
· Coordinating the appropriate emergency response to incidents in conjunction with the site Emergency Response Team and Control Group
· Support supervisors to conduct incident investigations as per company guidelines (including root cause analysis)
· Support supervisors to communicate investigation outcomes and recommendations company-wide
· Working with Geoscience & Discovery staff and their contractors to regularly update procedures relating to location-specific, potentially hazardous activities such as helicopter-supported drilling, fly-camp construction and remote ice drilling
· Ensuring adherence to all applicable safety laws and regulations in addition to Foran plans, procedures and policies
· Organizing safety-related training exercises and/or workshops with the team to increase knowledge and engagement
· Maintain employee training records and certifications, including the coordination of testing and re-certification as required;
· Fostering a healthy culture of continuous improvement to combat complacency
Job Qualifications and Skills:
· Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health, or a related field. A combination of related education and experience will be considered.
· Certification in occupational health and safety (e.g., Certified Safety Professional, NEBOSH) or willing to pursue it is preferred.
· 3-5 years experience in health and safety coordination, with a minimum of 2 years field safety experience or a related role.
· Knowledge of applicable health and safety regulations and standards.
· Previous experience working with exploration and/or surface drilling teams, including helicopter supported activities (critical)
· Experience with a mine project or operating mine would be considered an asset
· Ability to communicate effectively across different departments and levels within the organization
· Ability to adapt working styles to get the best from team members
· Positive attitude toward safety and safe work activities
· Commitment to following company rules and procedures and demonstrating leadership in all engagements with employees
· Valid Class 5 driver's license (Saskatchewan) or equivalent
· First Aid and CPR certification may be require
· Proficient in MS Office
· Willingness to undertake new challenges and additional training courses
Compensation and Benefits:
We offer a competitive starting salary range of $90,000 - $105,000/year based on experience and qualifications.
Annual discretionary short term incentive award at a percentage of base salary, rewarding exceptional contributions to team and company success.
