Digging Deep: Understanding “Other” Ways of Knowing for Effective Collaborations and Engagement with Traditional Ecological Knowledge

Drawing on research findings from collaborations with First Nations Elders and community members as well as her own teaching practice, Dr. Barrett will explore the significance of acknowledging diverse and often marginalized ways of knowing. This presentation will inform interactions and collaborations with Indigenous peoples and their knowledges.
Speaker: Dr. M.J. Barrett, A.B., M.E.S., B.Ed., PhD
Dr. Barrett’s interdisciplinary scholarship combines intuition and intellect in teaching, research and human-animal relations. Specifically, her research examines how expanding ways of knowing can contribute to research and enhanced relations with Indigenous peoples and the natural world. She is currently leading a nationally-funded (SSHRC) research project that examines the contributions of intuitive interspecies communication to bridging the human-nature divide. Dr. Barrett’s research lays critical practical and theoretical groundwork for transformative sustainability learning and research methods that take seriously the agency of the natural world. She is an assistant professor in the graduate School of Environment and Sustainability, University of Saskatchewan and has degrees from Harvard University (A.B), York (M.E.S.), Queen’s (B.Ed.) and University of Regina (PhD).
